COMMUNICATING

I can not and will not speak for you, but I have a very serious problem on communicating my thoughts to others in a way, so that they hear and understand them as I intended them to be heard.  Now I readily admit that mankind has advanced his ability to communicate considerably; from when time first began.  At least I am told by those who have studied such things; that this all started with no vocal communication at all.  Originally it was just poking, pointing, hitting etc.

Then, after who knows how many centuries, they began to grunt, wheeze, whistle or make sounds to help indicate what they wanted.  Finally words began to form, but still it was all vocal.  Eventually a rudimentary language began to develop, as pictures and finally into writings.  However, at first they were far removed from the style of letters we know today and only a few could write or read them.

It was not until about the time that America was formed, that anyone concerned themselves about educating the average person.    After all they were servants or slaves to those who held the power of authority and need not think for themselves.  Our Founding Fathers were quick to see that education would bring mankind out of slavery and into individual freedom and so it happened here in America thanks to them.  However they could not foresee the mass improvement in living standards or, the distractions that modern technology has provided to keep them from being watchful.  Nor could they foresee that education would be used to distort history or for that matter confuse the students.

Keeping in mind that all books were hand written until the 1450s when the first printing press was used to print the Gutenberg Bible; mankind had progressed in these 554 years to where today, we can instantly send books all over the world, make immediate translations to many languages etc.  That is a giant leap for mankind.  It took thousands of years to begin using sounds to communicate, more thousands till we could actual use words, hundreds of years till we could write and read them, and now in less than 50 years, to where we are in instant communication with almost anyone else in the world.

We still have the major problem of assurance that those who hear or read our words, get the true meaning.  Many years ago while we were traveling around the US my wife picked up a plaque that still hangs in my office.  "I know you believe you understand what you  think I said, but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant".   That and the fact that it depends on the mind bend at the time the other person reads or hears your words, as to what their interpretation will be.  This makes for a lot of miss-understandings.  Then when you add in the fact; that many times what a person says or writes is not what they are thinking, I marvel on how well we have done.

Now for my dream.   Let us for the moment project into the future where mankind has now developed to the point that written and spoken communication is not needed.  Mankind now has automatic mental telepathy.  For instance.  I'm out on an errand and my wife sees she is short of bread for lunch.  Her thought would be "I wish I had told Hoby to pick up a loaf of bread on his way home".  that message would instantly enter my mind and I would pick up the bread.  Now you would not pick up all thoughts from all minds.  Only those pertaining to you.

Whenever I have alluded to this dream in front of a group; their immediate reaction is, I sure hope that never happens.  Now I know, we all have had thoughts about others which we wanted to keep private.  However lets look to see if there is a good side to this.  Today you can have thoughts like {he sure is an idiot} while saying "good speech"; or {what a horrible hair do} while saying "that is a beautiful dress"; or saying "I will pay you back on pay day" while thinking {if you can catch me}.   Is there an iota of value, to any of these thoughts.  No.  We are just being honest with ourselves but  not with them.  Now taking the new system of automatic telepathy; all of us would have to be open honest and above board.  No more deceit, no more struggling to understand what the other is thinking or implying etc.  I don't know about you but I think that would be about as close to heaven on earth as one could get.

For the next week try this experiment.  After going to bed and before falling asleep, go over your activities of the day and try to see how many times you said one thing but thought another.   I have done this and now, have far fewer thoughts along those lines.  I found that After a while I began to be more honest in most all of my statements.  It is a little difficult at first because the old habit is so engrained.
