DEMOCRACY OR REPUBLIC Today we hear a lot about spreading Democracy around the world for others to enjoy its benefits. This reminds me a lot of the so called Medieval Crusades in times past. Before we spend more American lives and dollars on this great humanitarian effort; we need to exam ourselves and be sure that we too are not in need of some corrective action. It is my belief that we have not perfected Democracy at all. In fact we have bastardized it, to serve the few. One explanation was supplied by the U.S. War Department issued Nov. 30, 1928 titled "The Soldiers Training Manual". While I do not have a copy of it in my Library I did copy it from a friend who had a hard copy. The explanation went like this: DEMOCRACY On pages 118-120 A government of the masses. Authority derived through mass meeting or any other form of direct expression. Results in a mobocracy. Attitude toward property is communistic negating property rights. Attitude toward law is that the will of the majority shall regulate, whether it be based upon deliberation or governed by passion, prejudice, and impulse, without restraint or regard to consequences. Results in demagoguism, license, agitation, discontent, anarchy. [And I would add a larger and more expensive government.] REPUBLIC On pages 120-121 Authority is derived through the election by the people of public officials best fitted to represent them. Attitude toward property is respect for laws and individual rights, and a sensible economic procedure. Attitude toward law is the administration of justice in accord with fixed principles and established evidence, with a strict regard to consequences. A greater number of citizens and extent of territory may be brought within its compass. Avoids the dangerous extreme of either tyranny or mobocracy. Results in statesmanship, liberty, reason, justice, contentment and progress. [Emphasis added] Another man's opinion of the differences can be seen on this website. 'Democracy:' It's a threat to our republic My New World Dictionary says: democracy: 1 government in which the people hold the ruling power either directly or through elected representatives; rule by the ruled 2 a country, state etc with such government 3 majority rule 4 the principle of equality of rights, opportunity, treatment, or the practice of this principle 5 the common people, esp. as the wielders of political power. [My comment: In our socialistic style of democracy today we only have the choice of the lesser of two evils. Only politicians are put on the ballot and these are chosen by the National Party heads who do as told by those who donate the most money to the party. If only the people would go to the polls and write across their ballot "None of the Above" At least the parties would get the message; the majority is not happy with what they are doing. ] republic: 1 a state or nation in which the supreme power rests in all the citizens entitled to vote {the electorate} and is exercised by representatives elected, directly or indirectly, by them and b) the form of government of such a state or nation 2 any group whose members are regarded as having a certain equality or common aims, pursuits, etc 3 a state or nation with a president as its titular head. [My comment: What is missing here is our Founders point of views which define how the citizens must live under a Republic and those chosen for office must be statesmen not politicians. One must keep in mind that many of them argued long and hard against a federal government for fear that it would take away states rights; which it now has.] The same dictionary says: politician 1 a person actively engaged in politics, esp. party politics, professional or otherwise; often a person holding or seeking political office; frequently used in a derogatory sense, with implications of seeking personal or partisan gain, scheming, opportunism, etc. statesman a person who shows wisdom, skill, and vision in conducting state affairs and dealing with public issues, or one engaged in the business of government. My explanation is: a politician: is a person who chooses to make his living and esteem in the political profession. He will prostrate himself and his morals, before anyone or group that can further his career; at the expense of all others. a statesman: is a person who serves under duress of those who have faith in him or her, and will make every effort to make the changes necessary; to make his services no longer required, and they then can escape back into a private life. There is much reading on both democracy/republic and politician/statesman that you may read but we need to have a serious look as to why both the democracies and the republics have failed in the past and make some adjustments. That is how makind progresses, by learning from and improving on other's errors.
