AN IDEAL TAX

I still prefer a "Tax the Wealth" method but if you did not care for that one; here is another proposal and feel free to come up with your own method of taxation.

An ideal tax would take from the citizen in direct relation to what the citizen has acquired from the production worker regardless as to when it was taken.  Here I use the term taken loosely as the worker agreed to work for that amount.  However the worker's choice was limited by the supply and demand of the labor market at the time.

An ideal tax would not consider tax breaks for some individual or group.  I am fully aware that they were created to stimulate growth in one area or another.  Let the free market choose what will grow and not grow.  Subsidized industry gives a false impression of the value of that industry.  The only subsidized industry would be that which protects the health and safety of all citizens.  Tax breaks have also been used to help those who help the ones get into office.  They may give a philosophical reason to hide the fact but the result is the same.

There are perhaps many ways of doing this but one method that seems logical to me is:

All incomes regardless of source would be included in this method.  Compute the minimal cost of living for families of 1-2-3-4 etc.  Any family with less than this income would pay no tax.   Now add all the incomes of everyone and subtract the above amount from that total.  Now divide the amount needed by the government into that, to determine the tax rate.  Remember there are no deductions.  The minimal cost of living we will call mandatory income.  Everything above that is discretionary income that the holder can chose to spend in any way they care too; as long as it does not physically, mentally or financially hurt another.

In other words only discretionary income would be taxed.  It would be best if this could be a graduated tax so that those with the most discretionary income would pay the highest rate.  The important thing is to not tax that money which is needed to keep a human being alive, healthy and comfortable.  Our current sales tax in most places, does just that.   When one spends money for needs he is taxed.
